  • How to plan a wedding in the Scottish Highlands

How to plan a wedding in the Scottish Highlands

    Scottish Highlands wedding

Home to some of the most stunning sites in the UK’s natural catalogue, it’s no surprise that lots of ‘soonlyweds’ dream of venturing to the Scottish Highlands in the name of matrimony. Before heading north, it’s important to understand the practicalities of a ceremony in this corner of the country. If you’re picturing a beautiful wild wedding in the Highlands, here are some things you might want to consider during the planning process.

    Hone in on a location

When it comes to stunning places to tie the knot, you won’t be short of options in this part of the world. From the enchanting Isle of Skye to the mystery-shrouded banks of Loch Ness, beauty is all around you here, so your first port of call should be narrowing down your options. Perhaps you’ve visited the Highlands before and fallen in love with a particular spot, or maybe your heritage pulls you back to a village, town or city.

Covering nearly 10,000 sq miles, the Highland region comprises around a third of Scotland’s land mass; allow yourself plenty of time to narrow down your choices to pinpoint the exact spot you want to say “I do”. There are plenty of private venues, or you might prefer to go a little further off the beaten track for a slightly wild ceremony. Whatever vibe your dream day calls for, Scotland is the perfect host.

    bride-kissing

    Lean on tradition

Modern weddings often revolve around long-standing traditions. From the vows to the cake cutting, these customs can create the most meaningful memories that you’ll cherish long after the last jig of the night. If you choose the Highlands as the backdrop for your festivities, why not incorporate some classic Scottish traditions into your wedding ceremony and reception?

If you really want to commit to the Scottish theme, you might seek sartorial inspiration. Kilts and fascinators will always be sported at a traditional wedding here, with the tartan colours of the groom’s family on display. Or, for a more subtle nod to Scottish heritage, incorporate the mediaeval ritual of handfasting, where the bride and groom literally tie a knot with two pieces of fabric in their clan’s tartan. And of course, there’s no more apt soundtrack than the entrancing tones of a bagpipe if you’re looking for some music to elevate the special atmosphere of the day.

    Think about timing

There’s plenty to love about this gorgeous locale all year round. In the wintertime, the crisp air and snow-dusted hilltops work wonders to create a unique and festive atmosphere. When spring has sprung, the animals come out to play amongst the colourful wildflowers that embellish the landscape at this time of year. Depending on the mood and aesthetic you’re looking for, you’ll want to carefully consider the natural elements throughout the seasons to ensure they align with your grand ideas.

Generally speaking, summer will be the best time to host a wedding here. The better weather and longer days mean you can benefit from more time in the great outdoors during the day, before savouring the spectacular sunsets that adorn the Scottish skies. If you are planning a summer celebration, be sure to book vendors, accommodation and your venue as early as possible, as we can guarantee you won’t be the only person with the same idea.

    Be respectful

Wherever and however you choose to host your special day, remember that the Highlands are home to some extremely delicate ecosystems. Be sure to limit your impact on the natural environment by taking away all of your waste, and putting measures in place to protect the area you use, ensuring the only lasting impact from the day are the special memories you’ve created.

  • Lord Stobo’s Lament, a Jacobite Air

Lately i’ve been very busy and have started a build project for a new studio so I can make better music, video and stock more accordion parts. I’m building it myself on a limited budget. I began last year in May clearing the site and building the foundations. I’m about to start on the main building structure now!

Your support is very important to me and I appreciate all of ye!

This studio project is big and will take up much of my time but the effort will be rewarding on many levels.

In the meantime I wanted to share with you a recent video of a commission I accepted to create a tune, via Patreon. It’s called Lord Stobo’s Lament, a Jacobite Air.

If you like to play music the PDF music is available to download for free on CharlieAbel.com and IronBroo.scot. I’ve also attached it below for you convenience.

If you haven’t subscribed to my YouTube Channel please do. It’s free and is a big help to me.

    Yours tunefully,

Our hearts were warmed by the enthusiastic and lively atmosphere. From the very start, as we struck up our music, we could feel the energy in the room, building up in anticipation for a night of pure joy and merriment.

Our main aim as a Ceilidh band is to create an inclusive, welcoming space for all to enjoy the traditional Scottish dances. And oh boy, did you all step up to the dancefloor with such enthusiasm and spirit! We were blown away by the energy and commitment each and every one of you brought to learning the steps and joining in the fun. It was an absolute delight to witness the room come alive with laughter and the sound of dancing feet.

We firmly believe that music has the power to bring people together, and that’s exactly what happened that evening. The spirit of Christmas and the warmth of the holiday season filled the venue, creating an atmosphere infused with magic and joy. We were humbled by the sense of camaraderie and connection that blossomed among us all. • A new Ceilidh dance from our St. Andrews Ceilidh in Luxembourg

A new Ceilidh dance from our St. Andrews Ceilidh in Luxembourg

St. Andrew’s night is a special occasion to celebrate our patron saint and Scotland’s nationhood. However, this tradition seems to be less popular nowadays. It’s sad to see that it’s not as celebrated as it used to be. This year, Iron Broo only managed to perform at two St. Andrews ceilidh nights. On the other hand, we were excited about our second trip to Luxembourg to play for the St. George’s International School’s St. Andrews ceilidh.

    A new Ceilidh Dance

    Sandy Mathers (fiddle)

It was a wonderful experience to revisit the school and perform for the enthusiastic children who adore ceilidh dancing and music. During our performance, we even came up with a new ceilidh dance routine, which we have dedicated to the school in honour of its support. To add to the fun, we asked the children to come up with a name for this new dance and they did! Here it is…

    The George Hamm Luxembourg Reel

Dance Instructions, credited to Sandy Mathers (fiddle) of Iron Broo Ceilidh Band, title by the children of St. George’s International School Luxembourg.

    • Lots of couples in a longwise set.
Gents give left shoulder to band, ladies give right.
All hold hands in line with last couples joining hands to make a horseshoe formation.
    • 1st and 2nd gents make an arch, 1st lady draws all the line through the arch and round the back, to original postions again. (16)
    • Repeat the mirrored movement with 1st and 2nd ladies making the arch and 1st gent pulling the line through and round back. (16)
    • Top 2 couples make Right Hand Star for (8), Left Hand Star for (8)
    • Same 2 couples then form a circle of 4, spin for (8) and continue the spin while moving to the bottom of the set to remake the horseshoe formation…(8)

After the Ceilidh, a place to reflect

After spending a wonderful evening entertaining the children and indulging in the delicious half-time refreshments provided by the kids and their teachers, Sandy and I decided to head over to our favourite bar in Luxembourg. We had on a previous trip scouted out the place and found that Cafe Hammstuff was perfect for us. We enjoyed some local beer and a lovely glass of Cognac while catching up with some friendly faces. We are both eagerly looking forward to our next visit.

What’s your favourite St. Andrews night memory? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.
