The evening promises to be a fantastic traditional night out in Deeside, with Iron Broo Ceilidh Band keeping the dance floor moving from 7.30pm until late.
Whether you’re a regular ceilidh dancer or haven’t danced a Strip the Willow for years, everyone is welcome. As always, we’ll be calling the dances, so you don’t need to know the steps before you arrive. Just bring your dancing shoes and we’ll take care of the rest!

On 13th September 2025, the Iron Broo Ceilidh Band brought the joy of a Scottish wedding ceilidh to the shores of Lake Como. Accordionist Charlie Abel and fiddler Sandy Mathers travelled to Laglio, Italy, to perform for the wedding of Mark and Kate — and what a celebration it was!
The ceilidh was held at the breathtaking Villa Regina Teodolinda, right on the lakeside at Via Vecchia Regina. Guests from across the world joined hands for reels, jigs, and Strip the Willow, filling the villa with the laughter and energy of a true Scottish ceilidh. The stunning views of the lake and mountains made it a night to remember.

And yes, we couldn’t resist pointing out that the ceilidh was just yards away from George Clooney’s house. The locals told us: “George drinks here all the time.” Sadly, he didn’t pop in for a Gay Gordons, but we like to think he was tapping his foot along from his balcony!
For me, Charlie, this trip carried extra meaning. Having been married in Italy myself — to my Italian wife — this was the third Italian wedding ceilidh the band has played. It felt like coming full circle: celebrating love and marriage with ceilidh music in the country where we also tied the knot. ( see my video below)
We stayed at the welcoming Hotel Bersagliere in Laglio and, between wedding festivities, managed a ferry trip to Bellagio. Exploring colourful streets, soaking up the views, and enjoying Italy’s famous cuisine added to the magic. From delicate carpaccio and bresaola to handmade ravioli, wood-fired pizza, and crisp local white wines, every meal was a feast to remember.

A wee report of our recent trip to Luxembourg to play a school ceilidh.
When Iron Broo was asked to play a ceilidh dance in Luxembourg, I drew a blank. It was a place I knew very little of, except that it was probably an advanced European country and had something to do with the creation of the European parliament. I wasn’t sure if it would be warm or cold. It was December, after all. Surely it can’t be that cold? We are going south, I thought. Turned oot…It was colder than Aberdeen. When you think of a city, you usually have a picture in your mind associated with it. In Paris, you might imagine the Eiffel Tower perhaps, Rome – the Colosseum, China – the Great Wall, London, Big Ben, London Underground cabs and Westminster. I didn’t have a picture of what Luxembourg looked like.

On planning the journey, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that public transport was free, and this was clearly a civilised and advanced country. I wasn’t wrong, and we weren’t disappointed. After landing at the airport, you can hop on any free buses heading into town. Google Maps will help you find the right bus. You won’t have long to wait, and there are plenty of them. Almost everyone is multi-lingual, speaking Luxembourgish, French and German as official languages, but also I heard lots of Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. 18% of the population are Portuguese. Luxembourg looks very clean, modern and way ahead of a Scottish or UK city in terms of facilities and standard of life. They have clean public toilets that are free to use. I felt a little like I was from a third-world colony walking among the well-dressed people in the city centre. I saw a few homeless people, as you get used to in big cities but not as many. One used an iPhone with google translate to communicate to ask me for money. That’s a new one for me. I would imagine there would be a social program to help those in poverty. But I gave what I could without needing to be asked. I am a soft touch, some say. It’s sad to say this, but it certainly feels like Scotland and the UK are going backwards while some European countries are advancing way ahead of us. It’s clear this is the case when you visit a place like Luxembourg. In 2022, Luxembourg was ranked as having the first-highest per capita GDP in the world at $137,950(PPP) Not bad for a small independent country with 600,000 people.
We were playing in a school for an S3 ceilidh. I thought there might be a problem communicating when we were asked to call the dances, but the children all understood our ‘English’ calling, and maybe the odd word of doric that we dropped in. Some of the words and names you see around the city sound like the doric words. Gruund, for ground, Kierch for Kirk. The settlement of Luxembourg began with Celtic tribes some 35,000 years ago. Must be some common thread there somewhere.
A Bonnie Place
Luxembourg city is a beautiful place. It has a lot of medieval fortressing still evident and is built across a gorge created by two rivers, the Alzette and the Petrusse, in a dramatic canyon landscape. It reminded me of Edinburgh, in some ways, as a city in different layers. The high part on the plateau, and the low part in The Gruund. Similar but different to Edinburgh with The Royal Mile, Princes Street, Dean Village and Cowgate.

A fine haven for the weary traveller
The food is richt fine.
One of the crucial things you should do when travelling is trying out the food and have a wee tipple. Soak in the ambience of a new place. Taste the flavour and smell the air. I found the prices in many restaurants out of my reach on a Scottish accordion player’s budget, but we researched and found some nice wee places. We also scored because of the Christmas season; there were at least two Christmas Markets in the city centre selling top-notch street food from across Europe and local delicacies. Glühwäin was something special. With a shot of Rum or amaretto added to it …wow! The prices were reasonable in the Christmas market, some things the same or cheaper than the ones in Aberdeen! And it was top-class cuisine. Unbelievable! We enjoyed a fine tipple with local beer and cognac in the Hamstuff Bar and Cafe. A busy local bar with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We visited the famous Mousel’s Cantine, a Luxembourg bar restaurant that served traditional Luxembourg food and their own homemade beer. It was about the best beer I had tasted anywhere.
Luxembourg is beautiful, and I hope they’d like more Scottish ceilidh music. We can’t wait to be back.

We hired Iron Broo to play our ceilidh at a party to celebrate our recent marriage. The band were great, played a good variety of ceilidh tunes, called the dances and incorporated some impressive rhythmic vocals alongside playing. All the guest had a great time and enjoyed the ceilidh - thanks a lot!

Iron Broo played for our very first wedding at Kinclune House & Estate in our brand new wedding barn. Iron Broo were absolutely brilliant! The wedding party were up and dancing all night. Iron Broo recently played a ceilidh and disco for our wedding. Charlie was easy to deal and answered all our questions very quickly. Both the ceilidh and the disco were very well received with the guests of our wedding complementing the band and the music.
We booked Iron Broo for our wedding at Mar Lodge in Braemar in July and they were fantastic! We had a very international group with about half the guests having travelled from New Zealand and Charlie was great at calling the dances and everyone had a a lot of fun, even the teenagers loved it! The Iron Broo Duo threw us a fantastic party to celebrate our wedding in September. They happily accommodated some very last minute changes and executed a little surprise absolutely perfectly! They had a great sense of humour when some of the dances didn't go to plan (no fault of the band, entirely the fault of the beer!) and soon had us back on track. A brilliant band to hire if you want to have lots and lots of fun!
From the moment we started to plan our wedding, we knew we wanted Iron Broo! With my wife having attended a few of their ceilidhs in the past, she told me that Iron Broo were the best ceilidh band she'd ever seen. Of course at first, with our wedding being my first ceilidh, I was a little bit nervous but I trusted her with this and I can say I am truly glad that I did. We couldn't have asked for anything more, the music and dancing was incredible (as per usual). Many of our guests had also never attended a ceilidh before, but they made the process of learning all the steps easy and everyone ended up having an amazing time (myself included. ) They were also extremely accommodating, able to play a requested song for our first dance with less than a weeks notice! Thank you so much Iron Broo! It was a pleasure to have you at our wedding and we will be sure to catch you at future events.

They recently played at our wedding on 4th November 23 and were fantastic! A lot of guests had never been to a ceilidh before and they all really enjoyed it, especially the kids! We highly recommend Iron Broo!

Iron Broo are well worth hiring for a special celebration. Great musicians who know how to get everyone involved. Caller ensured everyone knew what to do and they were happy to keep it fast & furious when no one knew how to waltz! If you are thinking of having a ceilidh I would highly recommend hiring them.

Iron Broo played at our family and friends ceilidh in July. It was a two piece band - talented musicians who played in varying styles. Iron Broo chose the dances - a mix of traditional and new ceilidh dances. The explanations of the dances were very clear. Many of our guests commented on how good Iron Broo were. We would definitely recommend them.

Iron Broo made a perfect day even better, they had everyone up dancing and mixing, from 3 year olds upwards. Guests who had never been to a ceilidh before had the best time and plenty of laughs trying to get the moves right. We highly recommend them to get the party started

Hired for ceilidh at Wedding, very accomodating and friendly. Played a requested tune for our first dance. Called/instructed on the dances which was very necessary and useful for people unfamiliar. Flexible on day when time for break and end called. Hired 4 players including a fiddle and sounded great! Had heard play before, and look forward to hearing again.

They came all the way to Luxembourg to do a ceilidh with our Year 8 students and it was simply fantastic! They really motivated our students to take part in the dancing and the students ended up loving it! Thank you so much again! It was a great event!
They are very very good musicians who are masters of their style, but please understand they are not a versatile band and I am sure that is why they are the cream of the cream of ceilidh, however Charlie really takes advantage of his disco choice to make the night round. He adapted to my needs and I am happy to have decided to hire his services.

The best Ceilidh band ever, our whole wedding was jumping from start to finish. My English relatives couldn't get enough of the dancing and were guided so well. Thoroughly recommend Charlie Abel and all of his brilliant 5 piece band.

Amazing wedding band!! Played both a ceilidh set and disco afterparty. Listened to all my crazy plans and created an awesome evening for all my guests. Super value for money and really easy to communicate with.

We were lucky enough to have Iron Broo play for us at our wedding, where half the guests were Scottish and experienced ceilidh and reeling dancers and the other half were German and had no idea what was going on! The fact that Iron Broo got EVERYONE on the dance floor and partaking enthusiastically in both Scottish and German dances is a testament to their legendary music and DJ'ing! The evening simply wouldn't have been the same without them. Thank you so much Iron Broo for making our multi-national wedding such a cracking party!
